CARSON, Calif. – German star Marco Reus answered the call when his team needed it most on Saturday afternoon, leading the LA Galaxy to a much-needed 4-1 home win over Austin FC.
The Borussia Dortmund legend was the main man as the Galaxy enjoyed plenty of strong individual performances, recording three assists in LA's offensive explosion against their Texas foes.
The Galaxy spent this past week needing a positive result to get closer to securing an Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs spot.
With Saturday’s win, the Galaxy are now back inside the playoff places, moving up to seventh in the Western Conference table with 44 points.
“If we take care of business next week and we go into the playoffs, not a lot of teams are going to love seeing us across from them,” head coach Greg Vanney said after the match.
Stars show up
Reus, who missed last week’s El Tráfico at LAFC due to illness, is now up to 8g/15a in his second full season with Galaxy.
“Just so much quality of vision. Obviously, the assists show the vision, the awareness, the capacity to do things,” Vanney told reporters.
“As long as we’re running, Marco is going to find us."
Reus was not the only star to show up on Saturday. In his return from injury, Mexican international Chucky Lozano scored the second goal of his LA career with a header into the left corner. The former Napoli and PSV Eindhoven forward ran to Reus to celebrate.
“He has impressive quality, and I really like playing with him. I believe many players would want to play with him, and I am very happy to have the opportunity to be by his side,” Lozano said.
Former FC Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto also got in on the fun, netting his first goal in Galaxy colors.
The Spanish midfielder recorded an assist and scored LA’s fourth goal of the afternoon.
“Let's hope everything turns out in our favor, and if we reach the playoffs, I think it's going to be a completely different story. The team looks much better training by training, match by match, and that's what matters,” said Lozano.
“I really believe we’re heading in the right direction. We’re improving, and you can see a team that’s more level-headed and focused,” Lozano added.
More to come
Despite the positive result, playoff soccer for the Galaxy isn’t fully guaranteed.
The G’s will spend the rest of the weekend as spectators, awaiting results from the rest of the Western Conference.
The LA Galaxy can secure their postseason spot next Saturday in a Decision Day matchup at 10th-place Real Salt Lake, who sit just two points behind LA and one point outside the Wild Card spots (7 pm ET | Apple TV).
